Major Lazer
Major Lazer is a Jamaican-American trio in the electronic music genre. Consisting of music producer Diplo, and DJs Ape Drums and Walshy Fire. Ranked #45 on DJ Magazine’s list of the world’s best DJs in 2017. Now ranked among the top of the electronic dance scene, working in the genres of hip-hop, dancehall, reggae and moombahto. Through singles, mixtapes, EPs and full-length albums, the band members have received a dozen prestigious nominations and won NRJ, Billboard and Electronic Music Awards.
The history of Major Lazer began thanks to American DJ and producer Thomas Wesley Pentz, who as a child was fond of music and dinosaurs and after graduating from Philadelphia University took the stage name Diplo.
In 2008 at the performance of British rap singer M.I.A. the performer met a like-minded friend and colleague, known in creative circles under the name Switch, and recorded several joint compositions, which became the basis for the album “Guns Don’t Kill People…. Lazers Do.”
Later on, another member Walshy Fire joined the duo, who was responsible for image and emotions and took the place of frontman and MC. Because of this, the position of one of the founders of the collective weakened, and Major Lazer parted ways with Switch. In 2011, Trinidad and Tobago native Jillionaire took over his functions.
