La Roux

Pop Group
Biography

La Roux is a British electropop duo featuring vocalist Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid. Formed in 2008. Their music is heavily influenced by 80s synth-pop, particularly bands such as Human League, Heaven 17, Blancmange and Yazoo.

The band’s name came from a collection of children’s names that Ellie Jackson retrieved from a trash garbage can, which is where she found the pseudonym La Roux (ginger).

The band’s first single ‘Quicksand’ was released in November 2008. Its highest achievement was reaching number 8 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart.
The second single ‘In For The Kill’, released in March 2009, reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. The track ‘Bulletproof’ achieved more success on the chart, reaching number one in June 2009. On July 31st, the debut album ‘La Roux’ was released.

In February 2011, at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards La Roux won the Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Their single ‘In for the Kill’ was nominated for Best Dance Recording. Jackson tweeted “this is the happiest moment of my life”. This contrasts with her previous comments in 2010, when she flippantly stated that the group “rarely wins awards”.In 2010, Jackson also added Kanye West’ vocals on the latter’s platinum album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, which was released on November 22, 2010.
