Boney M
Just as it is impossible to tell the history of rock ‘n’ roll without the Beatles, it is also impossible to imagine the development of the disco music genre without the Boney M. decade. The explosive success of the legendary group began with the first song recorded in 1974 by German musician Frank Farian, who was experimenting with a new style. Over the years, the band members released 9 albums and sold about 200 million copies of singles, which was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records. This achievement no one has surpassed until now.
In the year of the release of their best CD “Boney M.” went on tour to the USSR, becoming the first Western band for which an exception was made during the “Iron Curtain” period. A part of the concert movie about the famous quartet was filmed in front of the Kremlin and shown on central television in the spring of 1979.
In the same year, the already legendary disco musicians presented their fourth record. “Oceans of Fantasy” was also successful, thanks in large part to the hits “Gotta Go Home” and “Bahama Mama”.
Looking back over Boney M.’s 40-year history, we can’t help but marvel at the scale of this group and the enormous influence their work had on Western and Soviet dance music. The project was lucky enough to be born at the dawn of the disco era and to enjoy its heyday to the full!
Liz Mitchell continues to perform under the label “Boney M. featuring Liz Mitchell.”, with Carol Gray, Patricia Lona Foster and Tony (“Tony Tony”) Ashcroft also in her band.
